For cars and goods vehicles that weigh less than 3,500 KG (3.5 metric tonnes) there must be at least 1.6mm throughout a continuous band in the centre 3/4 of the tread and around the entire circumference of the tyre.

If you’re stopped by the police and they find that your tyres don’t have the legal minimum tread available, you can be fined up to £2,500 and have up to 3-points added to your licence – this is for each tyre under the limit.
